Submission Requirements and Rules

The Scratch Post accepts many different types of creative submissions. Please see the requirements and rules below.

Eligibility

  • Undergraduate students currently attending the University of Kentucky.

  • Work created within the last 3 years.

Creative Writing

Biographical info

  • Your name, your year at UK (ex. 1st year), and your major

Submission details

  • Title of the work

  • Genre (poetry, short story, creative nonfiction, screenplay)

    • Poetry: Approx. 1-5 pages

    • Flash Fiction: Approx. 250-500 words

    • Short Story: Approx. 750-2,500 words

    • Creative Nonfiction: Approx. 750-2,500 words

    • Screenplay: Approx. 5-15 pages

Format: .docx or .doc, Times New Roman, 12 pt font, double spaced, titled as LastName_FirstName_TitleOfPiece (example: Collins_Suzanne_TheHungerGames). 

Visual Art

Biographical info

  • Your name, your year at UK (ex. 1st year), and your major

Submission details

  • Title of the work

  • A brief artist statement (Approx. 200-300 words)

  • Size, medium, date

Format: High resolution JPG or PDF titled as LastName_FirstName_Entry# (for example: Jane_Doe_Entry1).

Note: For 3-dimensional works, you may submit up to three different photographs to better show the work in the round.

Graphic Narrative

Biographical info

  • Your name, your year at UK (ex. 1st year), and your major

Submission details

  • Title of the work

  • Page range: 1 to 15 pages.

Format: High resolution PDF titled as LastName_FirstName_Entry# (for example: Jane_Doe_Entry1).

Additional Information

Once submitted, The Scratch Post requests one-time, nonexclusive, serial publishing rights for any work. Creators maintain the right to reproduce or distribute their work outside of The Scratch Post.

Creators are welcome to submit pieces that have already been submitted to other publications; however, The Scratch Post asks that the creator include this information within their submission and inform The Scratch Post if their piece is being published elsewhere.

The Scratch Post reserves the right to reject any work at any given time.

Works that are not written or produced by the original author or creator will not be accepted, which includes:

  • Any works produced by Artificial Intelligence.

  • Any plagiarized works.

The Scratch Post will not accept works that include subject matter along the lines of

  • Erotica

  • Hate speech

  • Works inspired by or using characters from previously published works, i.e., fanfiction.

Multiple Submissions

  • Visual Art: artists may submit up to three individual pieces.

  • Graphic Narrative: artist may submit two pieces.

  • Writing: creators are welcome to submit once in each genre.
